This is a living document to keep track of ways you can contribute to the recovery efforts for the countries and peoples affected by the tragedy that was Hurricane Melissa, as of writing, the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall in recorded history. It’s important for us to recognize that not only is Hurricane Melissa the strongest hurricane on record, it likely is setting a new precedent for the kinds of storms we in the Caribbean can expect to deal with in the coming years as a direct result of anthropogenic climate change. Is that scary? Yes. Fuck yes. But it’s real. It’s not fearmongering to follow the trends we’ve been seeing and expecting to see for the past several decades as primarily “first world” countries continue to burn fossil fuels at rates that are both utterly unnecessary and actively deadly.
The resources linked below are to provide immediate aid to those affected, but we’ve needed and continue to need more long-term action to stop the problem at its source: the irresponsible use of fossil fuels for the sole purpose of making a few obscenely rich fucks even richer. All of this death, all of this destruction for a number in some asshole’s bank account to get bigger.
